Comey Posed as Reinhold Niebuhr on Twitter
In American politics the showdown between the evangelical world view and conscience which had historically been popularly exhibited by Jerry Falwell has run up against the American conscience of Reinhold Niebuhr whose flag-bearer revealed himself by tweeting under the name Reinhold Niebuhr.
James Comey was Reinhold Niebuhr on twitter.
Said tweets allowed us to pull the curtain back and reveal an undergraduate thesis that Comey published where he wrote about Reinhold Niebuhr.
You can download and read the Comey undergraduate thesis on Niebuhr.
For a quick primer on Niebuhr you should know he wrote The Serenity Prayer and:
PBS recently did a special on Niebuhr as America’s Conscience (2017).
Obama has called Niebuhr his favorite philosopher:
“I take away the compelling idea that there’s serious evil in the world, and hardship and pain. And we should be humble and modest in our belief that we can eliminate those things. But we shouldn’t use that as an excuse for cynicism and inaction. I take away the sense we have to make these efforts knowing they are hard, and not swinging from naïve idealism to bitter realism.”
All of this Niebuhr-high-drama goes on without the public (the majority of the population) aware or interested.
I am sure that knowing whether Comey referenced Niebuhr on his twitter account is not a prerequisite to making a proper decision in the voting booth. The world does, however, seem more interesting when you can stumble on something like that for having read a few books by an old political philosopher on the recommendation of a friend.
So here is a recommendation that you can begin reading right away to get yourself introduced to the man that is still apparently acting as America’s conscience through the individual scholars his writings has influenced:
