Desert VII

In the desert, you can not always see your goals. They are not visible to you because they are so far in the distance.

In the desert, you can not know how long you will be away from your home.

All of the self-help and productivity guides you have read have no meaning here. The desert has its own system of creative output. The desert projects itself on our self and then integrates itself.

So what must we do? We can attempt to avoid ourselves and delay or deny everything. In the end, you might only find a temporary existence from this type of Aescitism.

We might try to make a garden in the desert, too. We might try to make the desert into what we remember from home. If we are very successful we will forget home and our goals all together.

If we are brave we will engage in the struggle of finding ourselves in the desert. The torment we endure will remind us of the road-focus or the path-focus. This will take our eyes away from the goals we can not see and the home we can not remember. This will bring our attention back to what we can do now to take a physical forward step.

We can never become our thoughts alone. We must have some ecological sense. We can not give up on life and let ourselves die to a spirituality of ecology alone. Even though the play of the desert is so seductive as a vacuum to…
